New Guitar - Gordon Giltrap 12 String

Ok - having admitted defeat on trying to fix the old 12 string.  I bought this today a Vintage VE2000GG Gordon Giltrap signature 12 string.

I tried the new Paul Brett Parlour 12 string which was hugely impressive, but the 14th fret body join, general dimensions of the Gordon Giltrap and the superiour (to my ears) plugged in sound meant I had to get this.  Give me a week or so and I'll do a bit of a review...

    1. Don't pay that much respect - many people think a 12 string is more tricky but really it isn't, you play the strings in pairs anyways... the real respect for 12 stringers is anyone who gets up on stage and doesn't spend 20 mins trying to get the bugger into something resembling a reasonable tuned state!

    2. Gosh.

I din't know that guitars were supposed to be in tune.

I thought they were supposed to sound like that.

      (sorry...still grumpy)

    3. This made lead to a blog post not to be read by the mildly depressive or worse... I could bore for years and years on the issues of tuning and intonation on guitars. Basically you have to accept a degree of out of tuneness with itself no matter how well tuned and set up it is. All sorts of gizmos, different types of nuts (oh er mrs), even very odd fret patterns. Saw a very old spanish guitar once that looked like a cribbage board on the fretboard. As you changed key you were suppose to reposition the little frets, one per string per note - imagine that as a guitarist in Westlife as they rise off the stools and the modulation approaches the guitarist yells out "Given me half hour I'll just re-intonate my instrument."

Stop being grumpy you live middle earth with all those lovely Hobbits and stuff... ;-)

  3. [swoon] lovely! hope to hear it played on one of your videos...

i know the pain of tuning. was jealous when i saw the Indigo Girls live a few years ago. They had a stagehand - with the sole job of taking the guitars off-stage after every song, bringing on new ones, and apparently tuning them before the next song. i need a tuning-minion...

  4. Graham, VERY Nice. In fact, Very Nice, indeed. Just for your info, I use Masterclass, by Newtone. http://www.newtonestrings.com/index.htm They certainly make my 12 sing. Cheers. :)

    1. I might give them a look - I should perhaps post about strings, for year Ernie Balls Super Slinkys on electrics, never better. Acoustics both classical and steel string I've been around the block - I have settled in the last couple of years on D'Addario - 11s on 6 strings on 12 String normally the very light 10s and down half a step to Eb
